BIOGRAPHY

Yajing Kang is a Chinese pianist, conductor, and interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles, whose work centers on the relationship between sound, narrative, and performance. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she also develops parallel interests in conducting and film production.

As a pianist, Kang is active as a soloist and collaborative musician, with a repertoire ranging from Spanish, French, and Chinese music to Romantic and modern piano literature. Her performances often take the form of lecture-recitals and themed programs that combine musical analysis with live demonstration, reflecting her interest in music as both artistic expression and intellectual inquiry. In recent seasons, she has appeared in solo recitals, lecture concerts, and educational events in venues and cultural spaces in Los Angeles, Shanghai, and other cities, drawing wide audiences and enthusiastic responses.

Alongside her work as a pianist, Kang is engaged in conducting studies and ensemble collaboration, focusing on musical structure, rehearsal process, and communication within performance. This dual perspective, as both pianist and conductor, shapes her approach to music-making, emphasizing clarity of musical architecture and narrative flow.

Kang is also active as a creator across media. Her original musical theatre song Ready won the Best Short Video Award in Shanghai, and her earlier work City That Never Sleeps was selected and broadcast by China Education Television as part of a national collection of outstanding original works. Her creative projects often explore the intersection of music, storytelling, and visual imagery, including music videos and short-form narrative works.

Beyond the stage, Kang develops projects that connect performance with ideas and public engagement. In 2026, she founded En Dialogue, a music and culture series that treats music as a form of dialogue, between performers and audiences, between tradition and contemporary perspectives, and across cultures and disciplines. Through carefully curated themes, and at times by bringing music into conversation with other art forms, the series encourages listening and exchange and presents performance as a shared cultural experience within and across communities. At its core, En Dialogue seeks to create more spaces for encounter and response between sound, ideas, and community.

She is also the co-founder of Xian Ge (弦歌之声), an international music-focused artistic development and study abroad consultancy, where she works with young artists on portfolio development and long-term artistic planning.

Kang received her undergraduate training at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she was honored as an Outstanding Graduate and served on the student union presidium. She earned her master’s degree from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. In 2024, she was admitted to multiple leading U.S. music institutions and chose to continue her studies at USC with full funding. She continues to live and work in Los Angeles, performing, creating, and developing projects that connect performance, ideas, and contemporary artistic practice.
